Article - 8th Year Running: Al-Shabaka Ranks Among World's Top Think Tank Networks

The 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index (GGTTI) has just been released. We’re delighted to report that Al-Shabaka again ranks in the top echelons of the “Best Think Tank Network” category!

We maintain our place at 35th out of 86 global think tanks in this category – just two spots below Human Rights Watch and six spots ahead of CSIS (Center for International and Strategic Studies) in the US. We also continue to be listed amongst the top 101 think tanks in the Middle East and North Africa.

The Index, published by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Lauder Institute, has as its mission “Helping to bridge the gap between knowledge and policy.” In addition to hosting regional and global events the Program draws on nearly 4,000 scholars, policymakers, journalists, and think tanks from across the globe to develop the ranking.

“The past year has been terribly difficult for the world at large, although there are finally signs of hope,” said Al-Shabaka board president Nadia Hijab. “Yet immense new challenges face the Palestinian people and require, more than ever, fresh thinking and effective strategies.”

She added: “At Al-Shabaka, we are redoubling our efforts to provide such analysis through our global network of young emerging voices and established analysts. In particular, we are focused on radical future visioning that challenges the status quo and points the way to different strategies to achieve Palestinian rights. We thank all our generous and dedicated supporters for enabling us to do so.”

Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network was launched in 2010. The only transnational Palestinian think tank, it is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States.

In times of profound devastation such as these, we take heart in knowing that our work is needed more than ever before. Al-Shabaka serves as a vital hub of Palestinian knowledge, analysis, and expertise for organizers, media, and policymakers alike. At our core, we are a think tank for the movement; our aim is to provide space for Palestinians to convene and strategize, and to produce Palestinian analysis that informs the frameworks of mobilizing efforts across the globe.

It is with great disappointment that we must clarify the facts pertaining to Al-Shabaka’s partnership with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) due to damaging misinformation circulated by the FDFA and its representatives.

We’ve entered 2024 at a time of unprecedented loss for the Palestinian people. As part of its genocide campaign since last October, the Israeli regime has murdered tens of thousands, displaced millions, and devastated every corner of Palestinian life in Gaza. The horror being waged across Gaza has left its mark on Palestinians worldwide, including those who make up Al-Shabaka’s policy network and staff.
