From this author
Social security functions as a safety net to protect workers in cases of illness, injury, and disability, and as a source of income after retirement. Its origins can be traced to the end of the nineteenth century, when Germany introduced the first mandatory social security system in response to workers’ demands for more equity in a capitalist economy.
