Article - Al-Shabaka Announces New Board President

Al-Shabaka is delighted to announce the appointment of its new Policy Fellow Tareq Baconi. He holds a PhD in International Relations from Kings College London and an MPhil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge. Tareq is currently a visiting scholar at Columbia University’s Middle East Institute. While completing his doctorate, he was an energy consultant at Navigant and Charles River Associates.

Tareq’s book, Hamas: The Politics of Resistance, Entrenchment in Gaza, is forthcoming with Stanford University Press in 2017. He has also published widely on Palestinian political developments as well as on gas politics in the region.

Tareq is Al-Shabaka’s second policy fellow and will be based in the United States. Commenting on his appointment Al-Shabaka Executive Director Nadia Hijab said, “Tareq’s areas of expertise are a valuable addition to the Al-Shabaka team.  He will greatly contribute to our goal of bringing solid analysis on Palestinian human rights and the quest for self-determination into the policy and media discourse in Washington and New York.


Founded in 2010, Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network is the only transnational Palestinian think tank. It has over 120 members around the world and been ranked in the best think tank network category for three years running in the Global Go To Think Tank Index. It is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States.
