Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network is proud to announce the appointment of Tareq Baconi as its new president of the board of directors.
Tareq’s unanimous election by the board concludes a five-month leadership transition, following previous board president Nadia Hijab’s move to the role of honorary president earlier this year.
“I’m delighted that my dear friend and colleague Tareq Baconi will be serving as board president,” Nadia commented, adding: “I have every confidence he will work with the staff and board to build on Al-Shabaka’s strengths and grow the organization to further serve the movement for Palestinian rights on our road to freedom.”
Tareq’s relationship with Al-Shabaka began in 2016, when he served as the organization’s US Policy Fellow. In 2018, he went on to work with the International Crisis Group as their Senior Analyst for Israel/Palestine and Economics of Conflict, whilst retaining his affiliation as a member of Al-Shabaka’s policy network, and subsequently joined Al-Shabaka’s board of directors in 2020.
Speaking on his appointment, Tareq remarked, “Al-Shabaka has long been a home for me, and I am honored to be given the opportunity to serve the organization and its brilliant team, and to work alongside them in our quest to secure freedom, equality and justice for Palestinians.”
Tareq brings with him a deep understanding of Al-Shabaka’s operations and vision, expert analysis on a range of areas pertaining to Palestinian rights, and a well-rounded network of colleagues across the policy, research, and advocacy communities. He is also a sought-after commentator and public speaker.
